I definitely wish I knew the language better because that way I could better communicate with those who I'm helping. If you look at some of my other videos you can see that I'm trying to learn Bengali as I go along in this project...

Pls Note that I justified your use of international language in this particular event. I admit language is irrelevant here. Your frustration regarding the ill-responses is genuine - I have faced the same. But, I had my frustration too - about expatriots ignoring their mother tongue completely. May be I put it in a wrong context. Wouldn't it be great if you would understand the words of gratitude, in addition to reading those grateful eyes of the people you helped? Its a personal choice though.

You're didn't strike me as a hateful person. If you were a racist, bigot, etc I probably would have blocked or ignored you. It's just been frustrating at times the response I get from the Bengali community (both within country and outside). Some are super rich and refuse to admit Bangladesh is a poor country with people suffering under poverty. Some accuse anyone who helps the poor of corruption. And, in your case, you're mistakenly accusing me of ignoring some imaginary obligation of language

Buddy, are you in a mass poverty elimination program of some sort or responsing to a sudden humanitarian crisis? Not all 150 million ppl were affected and those who earn even $20 a day were also among the victims. We don't need math but little logic (besides good heart, which you have no doubt about it). Just wondering what caused my irrelevant 'language' issue suddenly feels like a salt on a wound while concerned with suffering. Being a hero here, You could have easily ignored me instead.

Don't mistake a lack of financial ability for a lack of priority. And, respectfully, you're math is wrong. With a population of 150 million people of which 80% earn less than $2 a day, there are more people in Bangladesh who are poor than are people in ALL of Sudan and ALL of Burma.I've seen too much suffering and death by Cyclone Sidr alone to give a damn about what language you deem I should speak in. If you have a problem - stop watching.
nonichor (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
Well, if there is no such thing like one's feeling for his/her own language, culture and country...and being introduced as a 'human' matter most, then why is your focus is in only Bangladesh? People of Burma and Sudan needs more help than we do! Don't you think they are human too? Lack of priority! And don't think you did something for BD alone, there were other Bengali expatriots who respect their mother tongue went there and contributed too. 'Humanity' never ask us to forget our cultural root.

@nonichor - charity begins by recognizing there is no such thing as Irani, Greek, Spanish, Italian, Russian - only human. It doesn't matter what I "should" be speaking - what matters is what I do.The fact that many Bengalis in foreign countries focus on my LANGUAGE ability instead of the glaring poverty and suffering here shows a lack of proper priorities.

I salute your effort with uncultured project. Just one thing, are both of your parents bengali?(I know you grew up in Toronto)Then you should speak bangla ( I understand this video might be an international plea for help)look, I have never found any Irani, Greek, Spanish, Italian, Rassian second generation immigrants who couldn't speak their mother language. Only exception is Bengali immmigrants! Charity begins at home!
